Saving files to your U drive from a Mac

There is no Novell Client installation required to access network drives on a computer running Mac OS X.

Connecting to your network storage space

Logging on to a Mac in one of the Skillman labs doesn't actually log you on to the campus network—the initial logon process is just to gain access to the machine.

  1. To log in to Novell, select [Go] from the Finder menu and select [Connect to Server].
  2. Mount the volume by selecting it from the list of favorites and then clicking [Connect].
If you are on a Mac where the favorites have not been saved, simply type in the server address for the network drive you wish to access:

    • afp://students.lafayette.edu (U drive for students)
    • afp://nemo.lafayette.edu (storage for academic video projects-- special account required)
    • afp://faculty.lafayette.edu (U drives for faculty)
    • afp://staff.lafayette.edu (U drives for staff)
    • afp://shared.lafayette.edu (P and Q drives)
    • afp://arts.lafayette.edu (O drive for art courses)
    • afp://lingua.lafayette.edu (L drive for language courses)
    • afp://Engineers.lafayette.edu (S drive for engineers)
    • afp://scan.lafayette.edu (T drive for scanner dropboxes)

  3. Select the volume to mount from the list and click [OK].
  4. Enter your Network ID and password and click [OK]. (No name context is needed.)
  5. This will produce a folder on the desktop that makes it easy to browse to your home directory. You can easily open files from here, but if you're creating a new file in an application, your home directory may not appear in the "Where" dropdown list of places to save unless you've already saved there once.

Saving files to the drive space from an Application

  1. If you're in Word, PowerPoint, or another application, and you want to save a new document to your home directory... Go to Save or Save As, to the right of the box where the file name appears there's a square with a triangle that points down:

Click this and you'll get an expanded view of the Save dialog:
  2. You should see the U_Drive volume on the desktop and also under "Shared" in the finder; click this and you'll see a folder for your class year in the pane to the right; click this and you should see the folder with your username in the pane to the right of that—this is your home directory and the space that Windows users refer to as the "U drive".
  3. Select the folder with your username and that will become the location to which the file is saved when the "Save" button is clicked.

Disconnecting from network drives

Click the [Eject] symbol next to the drive listed in the Finder window. You can also drag the drive icon on the desktop to the Trash in the Dock; the Trash bin will appear as an Eject symbol.
