Adding a Kaltura Video Resource to your Moodle course

Kaltura Video Resource is a way to add multimedia content to your course. The single resource will allow you to add:

Managing Video Content in Moodle

All Kaltura content that you have created or used in any of your Moodle courses is located in "My Media" in the Navigation block. "Kaltura Media Gallery" only contains the content for the particular course you are currently in and does not allow for the addition of videos to the course except for Media Uploads or Webcam recordings.  All other addition of content should be done as a Kaltura Video Resource from within the course (see below) or in "My Media."

Uploading a Video:

  1. Click [Turn Editing On].
  2. Choose the topic block in which you would like to add your video resource.
  3. Click [Add an activity or resource]
  4. Scroll down to the resources section and click the radio button next to “Kaltura Video Resource,” then click [Add] at the bottom.
  5. Type a title for your video. You do not need to add a description, but it can be helpful if you are going to add more videos.
  6. Expand the “Video” section by clicking [Video].
  7. Click [Add Media]
  8. The videos that you have previously uploaded in “My Media” (within Moodle) should now be visible to you. Find the video you wish to add to your course, choose the size of the video player you wish to add and click [Embed].
  9. Your video will now begin playing in the size you have chosen. If the video you have selected is not the video you wish to add, you can click [Replace Media] and repeat the process to choose a different video.
  10. Now that your video is ready, you can use the “Common module settings” and “Restrict access” to control how and when your students access this video resource.
  11. You also have the option to upload a video not currently in "My Media" by choosing the "Media Upload" option from the blue [+Add New] button in the upper right. Choose the file you wish to upload, save, and choose "Back to Browse and Embed." Follow steps 8-10.
  12. Click [Save and return to course] or [Save and display]

 

Recording a video from your webcam

  1. Follow steps 1-3 under Uploading a Video
  2. Scroll down to the resources section and click the radio button next to “Kaltura Video Resource,” then click [Add] at the bottom.
  3. Click [+Add New] in the upper right hand corner of the window and select [Webcam Recording]. If the following window appears click [Allow] to enable Flash:

  4. Your computer may also ask to use your camera and microphone, click [Allow].
  5. Click on the screen to start recording your video and click [Stop] when you are finished.
  6. Once your video has processed (this can take a while), you can preview your video. If you are satisfied with your video, click [Save] in the video window.
  7. Type a name for your video (Required) and a description and tags (Optional) in the spaces provided, and click [Save] at the bottom of the page then click [Back to Browse and Embed].
  8. You should now see “My Media”. Find the video you recorded and click the arrow next to the [Select] button to choose the size of the video player you wish to add.
  9. Your video will now begin playing in the size you have chosen. If the video you have selected is not the video you wish to add, you can click [Replace Media] and repeat the process to choose a different video.
  10. Now that your video is ready, you can use the “Common module settings” and “Restrict access” to control how and when your students access this video resource.
  11. Click [Save and return to course] or [Save and display]

 

Capture Video:

  1. Follow steps 1-3 under Uploading a Video.
  2. Click [+Add New] in the upper right hand corner of the window and select [Capture Video].
  3. If this is your first time accessing this option, you will be prompted to download the Kaltura CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder for either Windows or for Mac.
  4. Once downloaded and opened, you can use the recorder to record your screen, screen & webcam, webcam, or voice.
  5. Choose the appropriate option, make your recording, and use the Kaltura CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder controls to end the recording [Done].
  6. An editing window will open allowing for review and trimming of the video, once finished, click [Done].
  7. You will now be prompted to add a Title, Description, Tags.
  8. From here, [Upload] will upload the video to My Media and [Save] will save the video locally on your computer.

 

Getting Media from media.lafayette.edu

If you wish to use content you have already created on https://media.lafayette.edu/, follow these steps: 

  1. Login to your media.lafayette.edu account by clicking on [Guest] button in upper right hand corner.
  2. Then click on your name and choose "My media."
  3. Choose the video you want to use and click on "Edit" Screenshot of Edit Button
  4. Select "Downloads" from the menu options under the video and choose the desired format.  Click [Save].

  5. Click on [Go To Media] and you will now see a [Download] button that will allow you to download your video.
  6. Follow the above steps for Uploading a Video.

OR you may wish to just embed a link to a video on https://media.lafayette.edu/:

  1. Follow steps 1-2 from Getting Media from media.lafayett.edu.
  2. Select the video you wish to share and click [Share].
  3. Select the 'oEmbed' option and copy and paste the link into a label or page in Moodle.

Kaltura Video Quiz

 

Kaltura gives you the ability to add multiple choice questions to videos when managing content on https://media.lafayette.edu (not within Moodle itself).  See the Kaltura Media Space page for more information on creating a video quiz.
