Service Description
Accounts/Network ID

Confirms the identity of a person so that he or she can access a digital resource. ITS aims to make digital resources easy to access by allowing users to use the same username and password to access a variety of services while simultaneously protecting those resources from being accessed by an unauthorized user.

Antivirus

Symantec Endpoint Protection is the college standard antivirus/malware program deployed on all college owned computers. Employees and students can download/install SEP, available for Windows and OSX, on their personal computer free of charge. 

Audience Response Systems

Sometimes referred to as "clickers", audience response systems are a data collection and assessment tool that collects real-time responses from participants either using a dedicated device, SMS messages or a web browser. 

Backups

Backup services are currently provided using Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) for data stored on College servers including but not limited to Samba, Zimbra, Banner, web, and imaging archives.TSM servers protect data from accidental deletion, and data corruption. In addition, TSM protection is an important component of the College's disaster recovery strategy. ITS is currently in the process of deploying an Enterprise desktop backup solution (CrashPlan) that provides unattended backup of computer data on college owned devices.  In addition, CrashPlan allows end-users or ITS staff to restore lost or corrupted data. Users are still encouraged to store critical files on Samba servers.

Blogging

WordPress is a lightweight content management system provides an easy-to-use interface for web content, and supports a variety of uses, including simple web page publishing, blogging, podcasting, and photo gallery creation.

Business Process Assessment

This Lafayette-specific process to assess the use of technology within college departments ensures the investment in technology supports the goals of the institution. A process improvement team or PIT Crew is put together of ITS staff and members of the participating department to work through the process assessment together. The team analyzes office workflows and implements more efficient uses of technology within a department.

A hybrid framework based primarily on Lean and ITIL methodologies was developed to guide the PIT Crew members through a process that identifies and improves areas of technology related inefficiencies. This leads to managing and measuring proposed process improvements over time.

Calendar of Events

The College calendar is a comprehensive list of events for Lafayette College and powers a number of weekly email digests. Events are organized into categories, each of which can be subscribed to via ICS or RSS.

Campus Location Scheduling

EMS software offers room scheduling, meeting and event management, and academic scheduling.

College Directory

The College directory allows visitors to search for faculty, staff, and students. It also includes listings for academic programs, departments and offices, campus locations, and emergency contacts.

Computer and Software Sales

All employees and students are eligible to purchase Dell and Apple computers (and peripherals) at higher education discounted pricing. Journyed.com offers discounted pricing on software to Lafayette employees and students.

Computer Labs

ITS maintains public computing labs in Pardee Hall, Rm 104 and Farinon Student Center, Rm 208 with updated PC/Mac computers and the full suite of Lafayette licensed software. 

Degree Audit

DegreeWorks is a web based degree audit system that will help students and advisors monitor progress towards completing degree requirements.  

Document Collaboration

A collection of applications offered by Google provides collaborative document editing and offsite cloud-based storage.  

Document Imaging and Management

Document imaging and management, facilitated by Nolij allows for the collection of paper or electronic-born documents to be stored in a centeral repository and connected to an existing record in Banner, if desired.

eCommerce

TouchNet Bill+Payment allows the college to accept electronic tuition payments online, and TouchNet Marketplace is an enterprise-wide e-commerce solution for establishing and operating online storefronts and compliant payment systems. ITS is accepting requests for new stores from departments and offices with a need for an e-commerce storefront. Requests for new stores can be submitted via the ITS Project Intake form.

Email

An enterprise-class email system, Zimbra offers an advanced browser-based interface and the ability to synchonize email and contact data with a variety of devices including an iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows or Linux PC, and a Mac.

Emergency Notification System

Alerts the Lafayette community in the event of a weather or critical incident emergency. Information is conveyed on loudspeakers throughout campus, displayed on on the screens of ITS-managed computers, and sent to the cell phones of students, faculty and staff by text message (for those who opt in).

Enterprise Administrative System

Banner is the College's enterprise resource planning (ERP) system which allows for the collection and management of its data assets. Banner also allows for the collection and management of employee and payroll information, along with financial activities. Banner Self-Service allows students and employees to access their information, and provides online course registration, student bill payment, and time sheet entry. Used primarily by administrative offices, Banner INB is another way to interact with the system.

Equipment Recycling

ITS provides electronic recycling services for life-cycled College-owned equpment. Departments should contact Plant Operations to arrange for equipment pick up and delivery to ITS storage.

Event Audio and Video Support

Regular ITS support for technology in classrooms is available weekdays from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, and consultation and instruction on equipment use is encouraged. To arrange for AV equipment and/or support in spaces that are not electronic (a.k.a. smart) classrooms or require evening or weekend support, please contact the Scheduling Office.

Faculty Consultations

Instructional technologists provide a range of consultation services including custom training, assistance and workshop sessions for faculty and students, developing project requirements that meet specific learning objectives, rubrics for accessing technology projects, and acting as a sounding board for faculty. 

File Transfer

Developed to the requirements of the higher education and research community, FileSender is a web based application that allows authenticated users to securely and easily send large files to other users. The purpose of the software is to send a large file to someone, have that file available for download for a certain number of downloads and/or a certain amount of time, and after that automatically delete the file. The software is not intended as a permanent file publishing platform. Users without a Lafayette account can be sent an upload voucher by an authenticated user. 

Hardware Support

ITS provides cost-free hardware and operating system assessment for most computers and mobile devices.  Assistance is available to students obtaining warranty service for Apple and Dell systems covered by a warranty contract.  Computers and mobile devices are assessed by ITS staff at the Tech Lounge located on the lower level of Pardee Hall.

Health Records

EMR is an electronic medical records systems that provides automation in patient intake, record management and online student health portal.

Help Desk

The Help Desk is the best first point of contact for technology support issues. ITS staff is available 7 days-a-week and can be reached by faculty, staff, students, and alumni at extension 5501, or via email at help@lafayette.edu.

In-person Workshops

In-person workshops on a variety of technology topics are offered throughout the year for faculty, staff, and students. General offerings are posted on the College calendar and ITS website; personalized sessions are available for classes, departments, and small groups by request. 

Lafayette Network

Allows students, faculty and staff to connect to the campus network and the Internet.

Learning Management System

The campus learning management system provides a variety of features for communication, distributing content, collecting assignments, and managing grades. Sites are created every term for every academic course and enrollments are managed automatically; sites can also be requested for committees, departments, and organizations. 

Loaner Equipment

ITS loans a variety of equipment through the Skillman circulation desk, including video production equipment, audio recording kits, web cams, and an audience response kit. The library also circulates Mac and Windows laptops and ethernet cables for use in the library. Laptops are also available for faculty and staff for up to 14 days by contacting the ITS Help Desk.

Mailing Lists

A way to send an email and have it distributed to multiple people within the Lafayette community. ITS maintains two types of mailing lists: discussion-based mailing lists, which anyone may join or leave; and official announcement mailing list, to which all Lafayette community members are automatically subscribed upon account creation. 

Media Hosting

Video content can be posted publically or to specific campus groups at media.lafayette.edu. Integration with Moodle also allows for private posting of video to a specific course as well as student video assignment submissions. Both options allow for video uploads, webcam recording, screen recording, and video presentation recording. 

Networked Storage

A place where files can be saved, backed up and protected. Files, especially those with sensitive data, can be saved on Lafayette servers though Samba; other files can be saved on Google's servers through Google Drive. Samba users get 1G of personal home space and a variable amount of collaborative shared space. Google Drive users get 5G of shared or personal space. These files can accessed using a variety of devices including a Windows or Linux PC, a Mac, an iPad, an iPhone, an Android, or a web browser.

Online Faculty Evaluations

The college maintains a seven-year archive of course evaluations. A valid Network ID is required to access the site.

Online Homework System for Math and Sciences

WeBWoRK is a tool for math and science homework developed by the Mathematical Association of America and the National Science Foundation.

Online Training

A software training and tutorial video library provided at lynda.lafayette.edu covers many software titles, scripting languages, design and web development platforms, and popular online sites. 

Personal Calendar

An enterprise-class calendaring system. Multiple calendars can be created and shared with anyone at the college and can be used to efficiently schedule meetings. Users can see when others are busy and send invitations, which can be automatically saved to a calendar if accepted. Appointments made on mobile devices or laptops will synchronize with the web-based calendar and vice versa. 

Podcasting and Audio Recording

A variety of supported tools are available for audio recording, editing, podcasting and distribution.

Portal

Located at my.lafayette.edu, the campus portal provides single sign-on and a starting point to access other online services available to campus constituents.

Printing

ITS supports networked and local printers for faculty and staff. Academic and administrative departments fund the purchase and maintenance of printers, with the exception of faculty who are provided an office printer by ITS. Laser printing is available to students in the ITS public labs, Skillman Library, and numerous academic labs.

Project Management

The Director of ITS Planning, Analysis and Communication leads the College’s IT project management efforts in partnership with ITS directors, the CIO and the College community. ITS receives project requests from all divisions and departments across campus and balances the various requests in the context of College’s strategic plan.

Remote Access

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) service allows computers to connect to the Lafayette data network from off-campus, thereby granting those computers the same access, rights, and privileges as computers directly attached to the campus network.

Reporting and Analysis

Oracle Discoverer is available for the creation of reports using data from Banner and Nolij. Discoverer Viewer is used to run existing reports, while report writers have access to Discoverer Plus to create new reports.

The links to access Discoverer are located in the Banner Links directory. Discoverer requires an account, which is unique to Discoverer and begins with the prefix ‘D00’. If you do not have a Discoverer account and need one, please have your manager put in a help desk ticket to have ITS create an account.

Server Colocation

A secure, environmentally-controlled data center space available for individual, organizational, or departmental servers. Individuals are expected to administer and be responsible for their own servers. Only rack mount servers that use A208 power can be colocated. 

Service Desk

In addition to help desk phone support, an ITS staffed service desk called the Tech Lounge provides support in the lower level of Pardee Hall. This space will serve as a public face of ITS and a place where the campus community can go to get quick help, one-on-one consultation, and other support services. Tech Lounge hours are Mon-Thur 12-8pm, Friday 12-5pm and Sun 4-8pm. 

Single Sign-on

Single Sign-on (SSO) is a session/user authentication process that allows a user to provide credentials once in order to access multiple applications. Logging in or out of one of these services begins or ends your session to all of the applications. At Lafayette, SSO is achieved using Shibboleth and CAS. 

Smart Classroom

ITS maintains technology-enhanced classrooms and meeting spaces throughout campus. These rooms are equipped with presentation tools that are used in a variety of ways to enhance teaching and learning.

Spam Filtering

More than 90 percent of all email coming into Lafayette is spam, and Proofpoint prevents the majority of spam from reaching users and stops email containing viruses. Any user at Lafayette can adjust the strictness of the filter, or opt out of it completely.  Akisment prevents "link spam," which happens sometimes when people post unsolicited advertising on Lafayette websites that enable comments.

Specialized Training for Courses

Faculty assigning projects that require any level of technology use can request a custom designed workshop session for students and/or schedule time to meet with them for training and assistance.

Streaming Video

Several options exist for posting or consuming web-based video content; media.lafayette.edu is available for posting and live streaming video publically or to campus and integration with the learning management system provides private video streaming for courses. See also the library's streaming services for licensed content.

Surveys

Depending on the level of complexity and confidentiality of the data being collected, these two supported survey tools, Qualtrics and Google Spreadsheets, allow for web-based data collection and reporting. 

Technology Grants

Teaching with Technology grants are offered annually to encourage and financially support full-time faculty members who are interested in exploring new ways of improving their teaching through innovative pedagogical strategies augmented with technology.

Telephony/Unified Communications

A high definition telephone and voicemail system that utilizes Voice over IP (VoIP) and allows voicemails to be delivered to email as well as for voicemail to be checked through a web interface. This system also has Unified Communications features: the integration of two or more communication services into a single interface, such as telephony, voice mail and email. Faculty and staff can log into their campus phone while away from the office and use it to make calls through their Windows or Linux PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Android. 

Video Conferencing

Built around a Lifesize Express220 codec with dual HD displays, Lafayette can connect to other sites via Internet2 at speeds that permit full-HD video interaction. For a lighterweight solution, Skype is installed on all smart classroom computers, and HD webcams are available through the Skillman circulation desk. 

Video Editing

A variety of supported tools are available for video recording, editing, and distribution. Whether you need to borrow a camera and tripod, get assistance using video editing software installed in labs, or post your video project to a streaming video server, ITS provides support for video creation. 

Web Analytics

Google Analyics provides web traffic reports for college departments, programs, student organizations, and personal web sites.

Web Archive

The Web Archive collects, preserves, and provides access to the College's institutional web presence through the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine, a digital archive of the World Wide Web.

Web Conferencing

Web conferencing with a combination of tools such as video, audio, and screen sharing is available through a limited licensed version of Zoom. Contact the Help Desk at help@lafayette.edu to request a Zoom account.

The college provides web hosting for departments, offices, and programs at depts.lafayette.edu as well as sites for classes, clubs, organizations, and personal web sites at sites.lafayette.edu.

Web Search

ITS uses Google Site Search to index College's web presence and provide search results. Important search results can be highlighted using KeyMatches, which map search terms to webpages.
