Creating and managing photo galleries using NextGEN

The NextGEN Gallery plugin for WordPress allows you to display slideshows or image lists on a page or post.

Activating and preparing NextGEN

Before you can use the NextGEN plugin you need to activate the plugin, update the Flash Player path, and disable the Flash uploader.

Step 1: Activate the NextGEN Gallery plugin

  1. In the WordPress admin interface, click the Plugins item on the left.
  2. Find the NextGEN Gallery plugin in the list and click the Activate link.

Step 2: Update the Flash Player path

After NextGEN Gallery has been activated, you will see a Gallery section underneath the Settings section.

  1. Click the [Arrow] to the right of the Gallery section title to expand the available options.
  2. Click Options.
  3. Click [Slideshow] at the top.
  4. Copy the appropriate path from below and paste it into the "Path to the Imagerotator (URL)" field:
    • For sites on depts.lafayette.edu use:
      http://[YourSubdomain].lafayette.edu/wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/imagerotator.swf
      (e.g., http://studyabroad.lafayette.edu/wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/imagerotator.swf)
    • For sites on sites.lafayette.edu use:
      http://sites.lafayette.edu/wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/imagerotator.swf
  5. Click the [Save Changes] button.

Step 3: Disable the Flash uploader

  1. Click the [Arrow] to the right of the Gallery section title to expand the available options.
  2. Click Add Gallery / Images.
  3. Click [Upload images] at the top.
  4. Click the [Disable flash upload] button.

Creating photo galleries

  1. Prepare your images by resizing them so their longest side is no more than 800 pixels. This will help keep your file sizes small. Also, save them as the .jpg file type, but be sure not to overwrite your original image.
  2. Activate the NextGEN Gallery plugin if you haven't done so already.
  3. Click the [Arrow] to the right of the Gallery section title to expand the available options.
  4. Click Add Gallery / Images.
  5. Name your new gallery and click the [Add gallery] button.
  6. Upload your images using either the [Upload a Zip-File] tab or the [Upload images] tab.
  7. Browse to your image file or zip file then select the gallery to which the image should be inserted:
    • Click the [Start upload] button if you are uploading a zip file.
    • Click the [Upload images] button if you are uploading a single image.

Inserting a photo gallery into a page or post

  1. Place your cursor in the page or post where your want your image gallery to display.
  2. Click the NextGEN icon NextGEN gallery button located in the Web editing toolbar.
  3. Choose the gallery you want to display from the drop-down list.
  4. Choose a display format:
    • Image list: displays as a group of thumbnail images. Site visitors will be able to:
      • Click on a thumbnail to see a larger image and its caption, when available, as well as navigate to other images;
      • Choose to view the images as an automatic slide show without captions; or
      • View with PicLens, which will display full-screen images as a slide show that can be browsed forward or backward to see individual images.
    • Slideshow: displays each image for a set period of time without captions.
    • Imagebrowser: displays a slideshow with navigation arrows. Captions, when available, are shown beneath each image.
  5. Click [Insert]. WordPress will insert the following code depending on the type of gallery you inserted:
    • [nggallery id=6] Imagelist
    • [slideshow id=4] Slideshow
    • [imagebrowser id=2] Imagebrowser
  6. Save the page or post.

Managing photo galleries

Managing your photo galleries allows you to (in one location) change the title and description of your gallery as well as the text associated with the images that are a part of the gallery.

  1. Click the [Arrow] to the right of the Gallery section title to expand the available options.
  2. Click Manage Gallery.
  3. Click the title of the gallery you wish to manage.
  4. Edit the name and description of the gallery as well as image titles; add image descriptions or tags; or exclude an image from the gallery by checking the Exclude box.
  5. Click the [Save Changes] button.
