The College has a policy for archiving unplayed media files in Panopto.

If you have media files in Panopto, here is what you need to know.

Panopto Media LifeCYCLE

  • Active: As long a media file is viewed at least once every 2 years, it stays active.
  • Archived: If a media file is 2 years old with zero views during that period, then it will be archived.
  • Deleted: After a media file is archived for 5 years, it will be permanently deleted.

What does "Archived" mean?

If a media file is archived:

  • The media title will be listed in your Panopto folder’s Archive list.
  • It cannot be played even though it’s viewable. If anyone tries to click play, the media file will not start.
  • Media files that are archived can be “brought back to life” by following the instructions below, “How do I restore an archived media file?”

  • When an archived video is restored, the media creator will receive an email notification that includes a link to the restored media file.

Will I know which of my Panopto media files will be archived and/or deleted?

No. Unfortunately, Panopto doesn’t have a way to alert you before your content is archived or deleted. You can check when your content was last viewed by following the directions below, “How do I check when my Panopto media was last viewed?”

If I edit a video, does that keep it active?

No. The system only looks at views so the video must be played.

Can students watch archived videos in Moodle?

No. If you have an archived video linked in Moodle, students will see a message reading the video is archived. The media would need to be restored before students could watch it.

Can I save my videos to my own computer?

Yes, you can download your videos from Panopto to your computer.
