Managing Event Feeds on Your Website

Departments, programs, and offices websites at Lafayette are currently using one of two WordPress themes:

  1. Hermione - The responsive theme rolled out as part of the 2015 web redesign, available to sites hosted on Forge.
  2. Lafayette Departments - The original Lafayette Wordpress theme, available to sites hosted on Depts.

Both themes provide options for including event feeds from the College Calendar of Events as part of your website, but they handle it in different ways.

Lafayette Departments Theme

Lafayette Departments uses a specialized widget -- and unique RSS feed -- to display events on the website.

This widget supports adding an individual category; it can not be used to add tags or display events from multiple categories.

Adding an event widget

  2. Go to Appearance > Widget
  3. Drag the "Lafayette Events RSS Feed" block to the sidebar column

  8. Click "Save". The widget is saved.

Hermione Theme

The Hermione theme uses the page components, rather than widgets, to manage calendar feeds. The calendar component displays the next three upcoming events from its category. You can add more than one calendar component if needed, but we recommend only using one to reduce page clutter.

This component supports adding individual categories; it can not be used to add tags or display events from multiple categories.

Adding an event component

  1. Login to the website.
  2. Navigate to your homepage.
  3. Click the "Edit Page" link in the black quick links bar at the top of the page
  4. Scroll down to the section called "In-Page Callouts"
  5. Click the [Add Callout] button
  6. Choose "Events Feed" from the pop-up menu.
  7. A new "Events Feed" component is added to the page. Edit its options:
    • Color: Click on the dropdown menu and choose one of three colors for the block: red, blue, or tan
    • Event Category: Click on the dropdown menu and choose one of the event categories from the calendar (note: tags are not supported by this component)
    • Link URL: Add the web address for the category from the College Calendar (e.g. https://calendar.lafayette.edu/category/43 is the "ITS" category). (Note: If not category is specified, the component will link to the College Calendar's homepage).
  8. After configuring the component's characteristics, scroll up to the top of the page and click [Publish] (if it is a new page) or [Update] (if it is an existing page) within the "Publish" block in upper righthand column.
