Did you know that our inboxes receive an immense volume of messages daily? While the vast majority of unwanted emails are stopped by our advanced filtering systems, occasionally, an unwelcome message might still land in your inbox. If you receive an unwanted email, here are some suggestions to help you manage it.

Report Phishing Attemps

If you suspect an email is a phishing attempt (trying to trick you into revealing personal information), report it to the Lafayette Helpdesk. This helps protect you and others from scams.

Mark the message as Spam / Phishing

The most effective action you can take is to mark the email as spam or phishing directly within your email client. This not only moves the email out of your inbox but also helps improve our filtering for everyone.

Note that deleting a message or manually moving it to or from the Junk folder does not affect the spam filter.

If a message is accidentally marked as spam, navigate to the Spam label in Gmail, open the message, and click [Report not Spam] to return the message to your inbox.

Block the sender

If a particular sender is persistent, you can block them by clicking [More] and selecting [Block “name of sender”].

This will send all future emails from that address directly to your spam folder.

Unsubscribe from the mailing list

For legitimate marketing emails you no longer wish to receive, look for an “unsubscribe” link, usually at the bottom of the message. Be cautious, though; if the email seems suspicious, avoid clicking unsubscribe as it might confirm your email address to spammers.

Delete and ignore

Sometimes, the best course of action is simply to delete the email and ignore it, especially if it’s clearly spam and not a phishing attempt.
