What is Google Chat?

Google Chat is a messaging tool for everyone at Lafayette. You can send a quick private message or work together with a group in a “Space.” Chat makes it easy to stay in touch. It is a great way to handle ongoing student questions or host real-time online office hours. You can use Chat right from your web browser (chat.google.com), inside Gmail, through Google Workspace apps, or on your phone with the mobile app.

How do I communicate with others in Google Chat?

  • Private conversations: Use a direct message to have a private conversation with a colleague or student.
  • Create Spaces for group conversations: Chat Spaces allow for group conversations. All members can view the conversation history, and multiple threads can be discussed at a time using conversations for different topics within the same Space. You can even add a Google Group to a Chat Space!

How do I use Google Chat?

  • Gmail: located on the left side menu, hover over “Chat” and click “New chat” to search for an individual to direct message or choose “Create a space” to create a group chat.
  • Chat web interface: Use the box in the upper left-hand corner to search for people or Spaces or to create a new Space
  • Chat app: Click the “New Chat” button to find people or Spaces

Once a Space has been created, you can invite individuals or Google Groups from within the Lafayette Community. See Google Groups for Courses for information on adding your entire class to a Space.

What features are available in Chat?

Google Chat lets you attach files from your computer, My Drive, or Shared drives. You can even create a new Google Doc, Sheet, or Slide right inside the chat. Plus, you can start a quick Google Meet video call, create a poll, or view everyone’s schedule using the built-in Google Calendar tool.

How do I control my availability?

Control your availability and notifications by changing your “Active” setting to “Away”. Others will see that you’re “Away” and know that your notifications are muted. This is a good way to signal to others that you are not actively monitoring your Chat.
