How do I download all submissions?

Within Moodle, it is possible to export all submissions for a particular assignment. This is particularly useful for facilitating offline grading. You might want to do this in order to use programs such as Acrobat or Word to read, comment on, or otherwise markup files to provide students with feedback. These files can be uploaded back into Moodle, which can be done in bulk.

  1. Click the assignment for which you wish to download submissions.
  2. Click the “Submissions” tab.
  3. Select the check box in the upper-left corner to select all students.
  4. Tools will appear in the footer of the assignment. Select the [Download] button.
  5. This will download a zip file, which will include files with students’ names appended to each file name.

How do I upload all feedback files?

After downloading submissions as described above and providing comments or other annotations, you may want to upload them to provide students with feedback.

Check to make sure your assignment accepts feedback files

  1. Select the “Edit Mode” toggle in the upper right to begin editing the course site.
  2. Find the assignment for which you want to enable feedback files and click the three vertical dots (ellipsis menu) to the right, and then select Edit settings.
  3. Expand the Feedback types section.
  4. Ensure “Feedback files” is checked.
  5. Click the [Save and return to course] button.

Upload feedback files

Note: You can set this option when you initially create a new Assignment activity.

Assuming the following is true, you can upload feedback files back to the assignment:

  • Your assignment is configured to accept feedback files
  • You have downloaded submissions as described above and commented/annotated them

To upload feedback files:

  1. Create a zip file of the feedback files on your computer, making sure to leave the filenames exactly as they came from Moodle when you downloaded them.
  2. Select the assignment to which you want to upload feedback files.
  3. Click the “Submissions” tab.
  4. Near the top of the page, select the “Upload feedback files in a zip” option from the “Grading action” drop-down menu.
  5. A new screen will appear, and you will be asked to select the zip file containing the feedback files.  Once you upload them, Moodle will confirm, and the feedback files will be available for students to view.
