Common Qualtrics Functions
Customizing the Survey Confirmation Page
Qualtrics allows you to customize the confirmation page a user sees upon completing a survey. You can create a custom thank-you message, redirect them to a URL, or show them a summary of their responses.
To customize the standard confirmation page:
-
In the Survey tab, scroll to the very bottom of your survey builder to find the default End of Survey block.
-
Click on the block to select it.
-
In the left-hand menu, under End of Survey options, change the message type to Custom.
-
You can choose a previously saved message from your library or create a new message by selecting New Message.
Important Note for Survey Flow Branching
If you are using Branch Logic in your Survey Flow, respondents who follow a branch will not see the custom message you built at the bottom of the survey builder. To show a custom message to branched respondents:
-
Go to your Survey Flow.
-
Add an End of Survey element at the end of your branch.
-
Click Customize on that specific End of Survey element.
-
Check the box for Override Survey Options and select Custom End of Survey Message to apply your specific text.
Sending a Response Notification via Email (Workflows)
Qualtrics previously used “Email Tasks” and “Triggers,” but automated emails are now handled through the Workflows tab.
To set up an automated email notification:
-
Navigate to the Workflows tab at the top of your project.
-
Click Create a workflow and choose Started by an event.
-
Select Survey response as your event, and choose whether it should trigger on newly created responses or updated responses, then click Finish.
-
Click the + (Plus) icon below the event to add a Task.
-
Select Email from the task menu.
-
Fill out the “To,” “Subject,” and “Message” fields. You can use the
{a}icon (Piped Text) to automatically pull in the respondent’s answers or contact info into the email. -
Click Save and ensure the workflow toggle is set to On.
Re-numbering Questions
When you add or move questions in a Qualtrics survey, the question numbers (e.g., Q1, Q2) do not automatically update. While this doesn’t affect the respondent’s view, re-numbering your questions sequentially makes exporting and analyzing data much easier.
To auto-number the questions in your survey:
- Navigate to the Survey tab of your project.
- In th header toolbar at the top-left of the screen (just above your survey name), click the Tools dropdown.
- Select Auto-Number Questions.
- Choose how you would like to number your questions and the builder will organize your question IDs.
Lafayette College question library
A number of default question types have been set up in a global Lafayette College library for all campus Qualtrics users to easily plug into their surveys.
To add a question from the library:
- In the Survey tab, scroll to the bottom of the block where you want to add the question.
- Click Import from library.
- In the pop-up window, select Lafayette College, then Question Library.
- Browse the categories (e.g., drop-down lists, personal information) and select the question(s) you want to add.
- Click Insert # question(s) to add them to your survey.
Note: Some library questions have custom validation applied to them. You may need to review and update the validation rules once the question is added to your specific survey. Please reach out to help@lafayette.edu with any questions, concerns, or updates.
Customizing next, back, and submit buttons
By default, the navigation button at the bottom of each survey page displays as an arrow →, but this can be customized globally or for specific blocks.
To add a Back button to the survey:
-
Navigate to Survey Options (the settings icon on the far-left navigation).
-
Go to Responses.
-
Toggle on Back button.
To modify the Next & Back button text for the entire survey:
-
Navigate to the Look and Feel menu (the paint roller icon on the far-left navigation).
-
Under the General tab, look for Next Button Text and Previous Button Text.
-
Type your preferred text (e.g., “Next Page”, “Go Back”) and click Apply.
To customize a specific block’s button (e.g., making the final button say “Submit”):
-
In the Survey tab, click on the actual block container to select it.
-
Look at the Edit block menu on the left-hand side panel.
-
Under the General section, click on Next/Previous button text.
-
A pop-up will appear. Type “Submit” in the Next button text field.
-
Click Save.
