How do I share my screen in Zoom?

Zoom allows you to share a screen in a number of ways. Please see Zoom’s Screen Sharing Features documentation for additional information.

Using Zoom Companion Mode

Instead of using physical cables or risking loud, disruptive audio feedback loops, you can use Zoom’s native Companion Mode to wirelessly share your iPad or mobile device screen in a classroom or meeting.

Companion Mode is explicitly designed for dual-device setups. When you join an active meeting from a secondary device, Zoom automatically suppresses that device’s microphone, camera, and speakers. This completely prevents acoustic screeching while perfectly optimizing the tablet for screen sharing and digital whiteboarding.

How to use Companion Mode:

  1. Start the meeting on your primary classroom computer or laptop first.

  2. Open the Zoom app on your iPad or tablet (ensure you are signed in with your Lafayette SSO account).

  3. Tap Join and enter the Meeting ID, or click your calendar meeting link.

  4. When prompted by Zoom, select Join as a Companion Device (or choose to join without audio).

  5. Once in the meeting, tap the green Share icon on your iPad to instantly broadcast your digital whiteboard, slides, or apps to the class.

Because Zoom natively manages companion devices, you can remain logged into your Lafayette Zoom account on both your laptop and tablet simultaneously without causing configuration issues or disconnecting your session.
