Is Lafayette Gmail the same as the personal (free) version of Gmail?

They are similar, but Lafayette uses the G Suite for Education version which provides more features, more storage, and additional security/privacy features.

Will my email address change?

No, your email address will not change! You will continue to receive all your email at your current address.

Will my NetID or password change?

No, you will still use your current NetID and password to access G Suite.

How will I log in to Gmail and other G Suite Applications?

There are several ways you can access Gmail and G Suite applications.

  1. Visit and login with your Lafayette credentials.
  2. Add the “My G Suite” block to for easy access to the most common G Suite apps.
  3. Simply visit and provide your full Lafayette email address when prompted. You will then be redirected to the single sign-on page where you will enter your Lafayette credentials.

How much time will it take to set up and learn how to use Gmail?

You’ll be able to master the basics, like sending and receiving email and viewing and scheduling meetings, very quickly. It may take more time to really learn to make the most of Gmail depending on your level of familiarity with Gmail.

Where do I find my Contacts?

Google contacts can be accessed via the ‘waffle’ in the upper right hand corner of your Gmail account under “Contacts”.  See the Google Contacts page for more information on how Contacts work.

How do I access Gmail from China?

You will need to install the VPN AnyConnect app on your computer or smartphone by following the VPN instructions.

If you are unable to connect to the VPN app and are:

  • a Lafayette student taking a course in China, contact Study Abroad at (610) 330-5918 or to ensure you’re listed as a student eligible to use VPN at Lafayette.

Gmail Migration Questions

When will I be migrated to Gmail?

All Zimbra accounts will be migrated to Gmail on January 14, 2019.  A few hundred Early Adopters were migrated at the end of November, 2018.

Please be attentive to the pre-migration messaging that you will be receiving in the upcoming weeks.

Are you migrating my email and calendars from Zimbra to Gmail?

Yes, we will copy all of your email messages, calendars, appointments, and contacts from Zimbra to Gmail, Google Calendar, and Contacts.

Are you also migrating all of my folders from Zimbra?

Gmail uses labels instead of folders to organize email. During the migration process, your Zimbra folders will be converted to Gmail labels, and the emails you had in those Zimbra folders will be added to the corresponding Gmail label. If you are missing any mail or labels (folders) after the migration, contact the Help Desk.

What about Zimbra tags, tasks, briefcase, and Zimlets?

Unfortunately, there is not a way to move tags, tasks, briefcases, or Zimlets to Gmail.

  • Tags will unfortunately need to be manually recreated using labels.
  • Zimbra tasks can be re-created in Google Tasks or Google Keep.
  • Download briefcase files to your computer and save them locally or on Google Drive.
  • Some equivalent Zimlet functionality may be found by searching for and adding plugins to your browser (e.g. Google Chrome extensions).

Will my Outlook archives be migrated?

Outlook archives are not included in the migration. If you would like to access your archives from Gmail, please follow the steps below to import them.

  1. Click the Windows [Start] button and search for “G Suite Migration for Microsoft Outlook.”  Click on it to run the utility.
  2. When prompted, enter your Lafayette email address and click [Continue].
  3. A web browser window will launch. Select your Lafayette account, then click [Allow] to proceed. You may be prompted to sign in.
  4. You will then be prompted to “Choose profile to import to G Suite Sync.“From the dropdown menu, select “From a PST file.“” Browse to the archive you’d like to import, select it, and click [Open].
  5. Make sure “Migrate all data” is select then click [Next].
  6. Select the items you wish to migrate. We recommend only selecting “Email messages”  as bringing over archived calendars will create new Calendars in Gmail.
  7. Click [Migrate]

The time it takes for this process to complete will vary. If your archive is large, it could take some time. Leave the window open for the duration of the migration. Once completed, you will see a new label in Gmail that is named the same as the file you imported.
