Bringing a personal computer to Lafayette isn’t required, but many students find it beneficial.

While some software is only available on college-owned workstations or virtually via Amazon AppStream, having your own computer can enhance your study experience.

Should I buy a specific computer for a particular major?

When choosing a computer, a key decision is between a macOS or Windows device. This choice ultimately depends on your personal preference and the demands of your major.

Most discipline-related applications will be available to students on academic department lab machines or online in your web browser with Amazon AppStream.

Engineering students should keep in mind, that much of the engineering software available for download is designed for Windows. Some Mac users will install macOS compatible versions when available and use college-owned computers for apps that do not run on macOS. macOS users may also install a Windows emulator for software that is not compatible with macOS.

Are there suggested minimum specifications?

ITS recommends you configure a computer similar to those offered on the Apple and Dell sites above. If you are configuring your own system you should pay special attention to how pricing relates to the processor speed, memory (RAM), storage capacity, display, and warranty coverage options.

ITS recommends the following specifications with the latest version of Windows or macOS.

  • Processor: Latest Apple processor, Intel Core i7, or AMD equivalent
  • Display: 14-inch or larger, with a built-in webcam and microphone
  • Memory: 16 GB RAM or higher
  • Storage: 512 GB SSD or larger
  • Ports: At least two USB, USB-C, or Thunderbolt ports.
  • Video out: At least one video capable USB-C, Thunderbolt, or HDMI

Do I need to have my computer insured or purchase an extended warranty?

When purchasing a computer, we recommend investing in an extended warranty. If you plan to use your computer for three to four years, consider a warranty that covers that entire period. Make sure the warranty includes protection against accidental damage, such as spills or drops. For laptops, look for comprehensive warranties that cover spills, accidents, and screen damage.

Alternatively, your homeowner’s insurance policy might cover your computer at no additional cost, although some coverage requires the item to be specifically listed on the policy. Please check with your insurance provider for the specifics of your coverage.

Can I have it shipped directly to the college?

The College post office will not accept deliveries for new students until one week before the start of the term. If you cannot bring your new computer with you, make sure the shipper will not deliver it until after you have arrived on campus. If it arrives too early, it will be refused.

Discounts on Apple and Dell Devices

Lafayette has partnered with Apple and Dell to offer discounts on computers for students, faculty, and staff. Please note that since the college isn’t directly involved in these sales programs, any customer service issues should be handled directly with the manufacturer.

Discounts on Software

As a member of AICUP (Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania), the College can offer Students, Faculty, and Staff discounts on software purchases through JourneyEd.
